Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus’ Cheryl Anderson and Santa Cruz Symphony Maestro Daniel Stewart will be co-presenting a discussion on Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Carmina Burana, a cantata composed in 1935 and 1936 by Carl Orff, based on 24 poems from the medieval collection of Carmina Burana.
With the “Ninth”, our co-presenters will discuss the conversational aspects of the 4th movement, how they refer and respond to the preceding movements, and how the rhetorical and philosophical conversation develops over the course of the finale. With Carmina Burana, the discussion will focus on how Orff demonstrates the many facets, stages and contrasts of life, and creates such a compelling program out of so many unique elements and sources.
