Clive Bagshaw

California Naturalist

“Welcoming Bees and Butterflies To Your Garden”

Clive was born and raised in the United Kingdom and had a passion for wildlife from a young age. While his professional life was laboratory-based and focused on biochemistry, his outside interests centered around natural history. He lived on the outskirts of Leicester, England for 30 years where his garden backed on to a corner of farmland which became a Nature Reserve that Clive was asked to manage. His own garden was also managed with wildlife in mind. On retiring in Santa Cruz in 2010, he realized that a Mediterranean climate presented new challenges for gardening, so he undertook the volunteer training course at the UCSC arboretum. This led to him establishing a butterfly garden based on native Californian plants at the Arboretum and participating in the California Naturalist program. His own garden backs on to Neary Lagoon and Clive has attracted birds, butterflies and bees by planting appropriate nectar plants, adding nest boxes, and digging a pond.

Especially fulfilling for her is the Children’s Gardening Program, currently on its 63rd year, where she’s seen first-hand the multi-generational benefits of connecting children to plants and nature, including with her own son. Ms. Hung is currently pursuing a certificate degree in Horticultural Therapy - a discipline with a holistic approach to using plants and plant materials in improving quality of life for people of all ages and disabilities.

“The Easy Way To Compost - With Or Without Worms”

After retiring from a very demanding manufacturing job, I looked for a volunteer job that would keep me busy and incorporate some of my own interests pertaining to recycling.  Grey Bears was looking for people to help with composting and I thought that was a good place to start.  Very soon thereafter, Paul McGillicuddy retired from his job as Worm Composter, and I stepped in with his assistance.  Because of my experience in production manufacturing, I started increasing the number of worm bins for production of worms for sale, and introduced the line of worm castings also available for purchase.  I enjoy teaching people about worm composting and helping them be successful with their new adventure.  My goal is to have every household in Santa Cruz County using worms to compost their recyclables and convert it into the best fertilizer for their gardens.
